thrift on.

Now you guys know, I’m not one to shy from vintage or anything crazy.

I mean, come on: Exhibit A

More crazy: Exhibit B

When Tori told me about this Housing Works Buy the Bag event, I was so game for the adventure. You buy a bag for $25 and fit in everything you can in it. Sort of an all-you-can-eat buffet but maybe more all-you-can-find?

I mean, OK, I’m also not going to lie, I was a bit scared of what this also was going to be like. Was there going to be a stampede of people? What do I do when I’m inside? Do I have to be aggressive?

Well, to answer all those questions, it was not what I expected. Or it was, sort of.

When we got there, immediately, we noticed there were a bunch of camera men around. a CREW of camera men. I mean, this was not hired for just a measly YouTube sizzle reel. Turns out, they were filming a new reality series for Oxygen call “Thrift Wars” ( I can only imagine this as a spin off of the ever so popular Storage Wars…)

Vintage bloggers and thrift store owners battle to find hidden gems in places like…Housing Works. Something compelling in that only it was totally scripted, as you can imagine.

While we did get sidetracked during the experience laughing at the scripted act, we did get in the zone and found some good finds! Bins and bins full of clothes, and it was only up to us to rifle through them.

I found this Christian Dior wool peacoat AND this gorgeous vintage Chloe white jacquard dress. The only sad thing about these two (and they were the BEST finds) are that they don’t necessarily fit!

That’s a key lesson in thrifting. I learned that it almost doesn’t really matter if it fits or not but if it’s a good vintage find, you’re bound to find another home for it somewhere else. I’m thinking of flipping these over and reselling them to a vintage store of some sort online.

Other amazing pieces I found and am absolutely in love with is my Calypso dress, Joseph blazer, Ralph Lauren military jacket, Oscar de la Renta silk scarf,  a sequin vest, random vintage tops- there’s one that could really rival that leopard clown silk shirt.

So there was my first thrifting extravanganza experience. Learned to spot great colors, good materials, check labels… and for next time, bring tissues!!! ( I was sneezing up a storm in there! + will definitely be seen sniffling in the show!)

Thrift on.
